(O)estrogen Receptor (ER): the presence of special receptors within breast cancer cells, usually evaluated by a staining technique, that determine the tumour's responsiveness to the female hormone oestrogen. ER positive tumours are responsive to the tablet tamoxifen (see endocrine therapy entry).
